Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction will be the first Mickey Mouse ride that is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The Runaway Railway attraction will replace The Great Movie Ride in the Chinese Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The new ride will be called “Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.” This ride will feature Mickey Mouse. The contract with TCM, Turner Classic Movies, expired and Disney did not want to renew the contract. So, their only choice was to change the ride.

What is the attraction about?

On Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be based on the Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short on the Disney Channel.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will feature a new story and sing-able theme song. This attraction will introduce a new experience called “2 1/2 D” which 3D glasses will not be required. Kevin Rafferty, the Walt Disney Imagineer, said teams are inventing new technologies that turn the flat world of a colorful cartoon short into a “dimensional display of amazingness.”

“This is one of the boldest…most impossible things I’ve ever worked on in almost 40 years of being an Imagineer. And you know what? That’s what I love about it. Well, that, and Mickey,” Kevin said. “This is not going to be a small attraction, it’s going to be game-changing.”

Location

The final day for The Great Movie Ride was on August 31, 2017. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will take the place of The Great Movie Ride. Nothing has been mentioned as to if they are going to change the outside of the Chinese Theater. My guess is that they will keep it the same and just change the inside of it.

Opening Date

Disney did not mention or hint to when Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open. I am thinking that it will open in 2021 just in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary.
